Ambiguous terror: This was the guiding principle behind the title sequence for AUM: The Cult at the End of the World. Directors Ben Braun and Chiaki Yanagimoto wanted a minimal yet effective title reveal that would elicit complex emotions of dread and intrigue for the story of what led to the subway sarin gas terrorist attack in 1995, Tokyo. The idea was to deliver an emotionally powerful intro to the film without giving anything away. Using the recordings of emergency responders as the narrator's voice, we were able to develop a solution that was elegant yet cryptic, setting the tone for the horrific events about to unfold.

Title Design

Sometimes “simple” design requires a complex approach to dig down and discover the essence of the story. Exploration and analysis of key elements that stitch together themes throughout the film helped us stylistically solve what would be required tonally with our visuals.

Going Retro

Since much of the film utilizes archival video, we needed to find a way to present infographics in the same manner, as if they were discovered in the research. These CRT style graphs demonstrating the growth of the cult match the 80/90’s era footage that is featured throughout the story perfectly.
